Each Thomas Laine piece is designed and handcrafted to be worn — and to last for generations. A little routine care is all it asks. Here is how to keep your jewelry at its best, and when to bring it back to us.

Everyday wear

Jewelry is best put on last and taken off first. Perfume, cosmetics and skincare are kind to you but not to gemstones and precious metals — let them settle before your pieces go on.

Take rings and bracelets off for exercise, gardening, housework and swimming. Chlorine and household cleaners are particularly unkind to gold, and a knock against a hard surface can do more damage than years of gentle wear.

Gentle by design

We work in solid gold and hand-selected stones because they are made to last — but durable is not the same as indestructible. Even a diamond or sapphire can chip if struck at the wrong angle, and gold, being a soft metal at heart, can dent and scratch under pressure. Treat each piece as the small, precise object it is and it will reward you for decades.

Cleaning at home

For gold and most gem-set pieces, warm water and a drop of mild dish soap is all you need. Soak for fifteen to twenty minutes, work gently around the setting with a soft brush, rinse in clean water and pat dry before finishing with a jewelry polishing cloth.

Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cloths and home ultrasonic cleaners — they promise speed and deliver damage.

Emeralds and softer gemstones

Some of the stones we love most — emeralds among them — are softer or naturally treated, and ask for a gentler routine. Never soak them and never use an ultrasonic cleaner; a soft, dry jewelry cloth after wear is all they need. If you are unsure how your particular stone likes to be treated, ask us — we know each piece well.

Pearls

Pearls are organic and wear their history. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe them with a soft cloth after wear, and never soak them or expose them to chemicals. Stored away from harder stones — which will scratch them — they develop a lustre that only improves with time.

Sterling silver

Silver tarnishes naturally as it meets the air; this is chemistry, not a flaw. A silver polishing cloth restores the shine in moments. Between wears, keep silver pieces in a pouch or lined box, away from humidity.

Storage

Store each piece separately — a lined box or individual pouch is ideal. Diamonds and sapphires are hard enough to scratch everything else in the drawer, including each other. Keep jewelry away from direct sunlight, radiators and damp rooms, and fasten chains before putting them away to spare yourself the knots.
